Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd is seeking the death penalty for a Gilmer man charged with killing two sisters in 2023.

Alvin Charles McKnight , on a capital murder charge for the Nov. 4, 2023, shooting deaths of Dermetrica Waters, 37, and Mandy Ray, 35, at an Upshur County home. McKnight pleaded not guilty, .

Byrd性视界传媒檚 office filed notice this week of its intent to seek the death penalty, the Gilmer Mirror reported.

McKnight性视界传媒檚 case is the first time the Upshur County DA性视界传媒檚 office has sought the death penalty for a defendant since the late 1980s, when Jerry Walter 性视界传媒淎nimal性视界传媒� McFadden murdered Wood County teenagers Suzanne Harrison, Brian Boone and Gena Turner and took jailer Rosalie Williams hostage when he escaped from jail.

He was recaptured three days later after one of the largest manhunts in Texas history. McFadden was put to death by lethal injection Oct. 14, 1999.

McKnight, 42, was on the run for approximately two weeks after Waters and Ray were found dead Nov. 4, 2023, in the 2800 block of U.S. 271 South near Bluebird Road. McKnight and Waters had lived together, and the Upshur County Sheriff性视界传媒檚 Office previously said the case is considered an incident of domestic violence.

McKnight was able to evade arrest with the help of his sister, according to the sheriff性视界传媒檚 office. McKnight boarded a bus in Abilene headed for San Bernadino, California, where he was apprehended without incident. His sister, Laquesha Monique McKnight, 38, of Longview was arrested and charged with hindering apprehension or prosecution.

McKnight was listed on the Texas Department of Public Safety性视界传媒檚 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list until his capture. He remains in the Upshur County Jail.
