Four years ago, Gregg County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Tim Bryan learned how vital the Christus Good Shepherd Health System in Longview is.
Bryan didn性视界传媒檛 have a history of heart-related health issues, nor did his family. But Feb. 4, 2021, remains a blur to him. He suffered what性视界传媒檚 called a 性视界传媒渨idowmaker性视界传媒 heart attack that day. Without a lead-footed Christus ambulance driver and a team of medical workers at the Longview hospital, he wouldn性视界传媒檛 be alive.
性视界传媒淚t性视界传媒檚 still overwhelming to think about how close to death I came,性视界传媒 he said. But spanning the distance between life and death were God and the hospital that has served countless patients such as Bryan in its 90 years of operation.

On Thursday, Christus Good Shepherd Health System leaders and Longview community members celebrated the hospital性视界传媒檚 90th year of serving East Texas during a ceremony at the hospital. With a mission to 性视界传媒渆xtend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ,性视界传媒 the hospital性视界传媒檚 medical professionals will continue to serve the region for years to come, officials said.
性视界传媒淲e don性视界传媒檛 just look back with gratitude. We look forward with purpose,性视界传媒 Christus Health System President and CEO Todd Hancock said. 性视界传媒淭he challenges ahead call us to be bold and compassionate as those pioneers were. With their example to guide us, we will advance medical care. We will expand access. We will meet the needs of tomorrow, always rooted in faith based on the mission that they entrusted to us.性视界传媒

Small beginningsToday, the Christus Good Shepherd hospital in Longview towers over Marshall Avenue and is filled with modern imaging technology, surgical suites and rooms for 335 patients. That性视界传媒檚 a far cry from what was available in 1935, when its predecessor 性视界传媒 Gregg Memorial Hospital 性视界传媒 opened with 47 beds and, as one would imagine, primitive medical equipment.
While most of the nation was weathering the effects of the Great Depression, black gold was keeping East Texas afloat: The East Texas oil boom had begun, and regional prosperity and philanthropy meant that the Gregg Memorial Hospital could open without debt, Hancock said. The people who started the hospital 性视界传媒渇elt the call性视界传媒 to serve and heal people in East Texas.
性视界传媒淭hat vision wasn性视界传媒檛 just borne of brick and mortar alone. It was carried in the hearts of those early founders, the physicians, the nurses, the community members who believed that Longview deserved a place of healing, rooted in faith and in compassion,性视界传媒 Hancock said.

In 1960, the hospital became Good Shepherd Hospital, and in 1970, the original one-story structure was replaced with a four-story, 276-bed building. The hospital性视界传媒檚 capacity was expanded in 1981, and the same year, 性视界传媒淗ealth System性视界传媒 was added to its name.
The Good Shepherd system expanded in 2007 when Marshall Regional Medical Center was brought into the system, and additional locations have been added.
性视界传媒楧ivine intervention性视界传媒
Like a sick patient, the Good Shepherd Health System needed a good doctor 10 years ago. The hospital was struggling with staggering debt, estimated at roughly $150 million, resulting in layoffs and facility closures. Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt wondered if the hospital itself would survive.
性视界传媒淲e were looking at a hospital system that was in distress, and we needed divine intervention. And I believe Christus was that divine intervention,性视界传媒 he said.

Christus Health worked with county officials to take over the Good Shepherd Health System in 2017. Since then, Christus has invested nearly $200 million in Gregg County, Stoudt said, and roughly $400 million throughout the region.
性视界传媒淚n a short period of time, what Christus has done for this community and healthcare is immeasurable,性视界传媒 he said. 性视界传媒淵ou can talk about the dollars. There性视界传媒檚 so much more: hundreds, if not thousands, of people性视界传媒檚 lives that this hospital has touched.性视界传媒
Stoudt and Longview Mayor Kristen Ishihara thanked the hospital性视界传媒檚 leaders, medical workers and associates for serving the community.
性视界传媒淚t is such a privilege and a blessing to have you as part of our community,性视界传媒 Ishihara said during Thursday性视界传媒檚 ceremony.
Representatives for state Sen. Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola, and state Rep. Jay Dean, R-Longview, read letters commending the hospital, and U.S. Sen. John Cornyn prepared a video message in which he said the hospital is an 性视界传媒渆xtraordinary community性视界传媒 of dedicated medical professionals.

Moving forwardThe hospital system continues to invest in the region. In January, leaders broke ground for construction of a $36 million cancer treatment center in Longview, and in March 2024, health system leaders told county officials that they intend to invest up to $150 million in their facilities in Longview in the next several years.
In the past year, the health system opened a new pediatric clinic in Marshall in cooperation with the Shriners Children性视界传媒檚 Texas children性视界传媒檚 hospital and helped open a new nursing instructional facility in Kilgore. This summer, a new emergency center will open in Henderson.
Christus Good Shepherd Health System remains the largest employer in Gregg County with more than 3,300 employees.
Chris Glenney, senior vice president of group operations for Christus Health in Northeast Texas and North Louisiana, thanked East Texas community members for supporting and trusting the hospital and its staff.
性视界传媒淕ood Shepherd is amongst the best hospitals in this country and in the state of Texas,性视界传媒 Glenney said. 性视界传媒淭he future of Christus Good Shepherd and this amazing ministry is bright because our mission, guided by faith, fueled by compassion, is kindness. We will continue to champion healthcare in northeast Texas.性视界传媒
