Senator John Cornyn (R) Texas聽
性视界传媒淚n both states, you have incumbent Republicans being attacked from the right,性视界传媒 Jones said. 性视界传媒淜en Paxton is a major threat to Cornyn in Texas, and John Fleming is going after Cassidy in Louisiana.性视界传媒

Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming
Paxton, the current Texas attorney general, holds a slight polling edge over Cornyn. But Jones warns that Paxton性视界传媒檚 numerous legal and ethical controversies性视界传媒攊ncluding a failed 2023 impeachment effort and alleged abuse of office性视界传媒攎ake him a risky general election candidate.
性视界传媒淩epublicans are worried that if Paxton wins the primary, Democrats could have a real shot at flipping the seat,性视界传媒 Jones said. 性视界传媒淗e性视界传媒檚 never faced a well-funded opponent性视界传媒攁nd that would change in 2026.性视界传媒

Former Democratic Congressman Colin Allred
If Cornyn survives the primary, Jones believes Texas will remain a safer bet for Republicans. But he noted that Democratic challenger Colin Allred, who previously ran against Sen. Ted Cruz, could benefit from name recognition and national financial support.
In Louisiana, however, the path is clearer.
性视界传媒淲hoever wins the GOP primary there will almost certainly win in November,性视界传媒 Jones said. 性视界传媒淭hat性视界传媒檚 not the case in Texas 性视界传媒 especially if it性视界传媒檚 Paxton.性视界传媒
Jones added that Republican elites are quietly pushing another option: Rep. Wesley Hunt of Houston, seen as a conservative alternative to Paxton without the baggage.
性视界传媒淭here性视界传媒檚 a lot of behind-the-scenes maneuvering to create space for Hunt,性视界传媒 Jones explained. 性视界传媒淭hey see him as someone who can win both the primary and the general election.性视界传媒
Ultimately, Jones said, 2026 could break the GOP性视界传媒檚 decades-long statewide winning streak in Texas 性视界传媒 if the conditions are right.
性视界传媒淚f the economy性视界传媒檚 down, if Trump is unpopular, and if Republicans nominate a flawed candidate like Paxton, Democrats could capitalize,性视界传媒 Jones said. 性视界传媒淚t性视界传媒檚 still an uphill battle, but not impossible.性视界传媒
