QUESTION: McCann Road is not in good shape, and there are rough spots that look like someone started to work on the road and stopped. What性视界传媒檚 going on?
ANSWER: This is a conglomeration of questions and complaints I性视界传媒檝e heard about McCann Road lately.
First, McCann is actually maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation.
The agency started some work on the road and is now planning a different, larger project for McCann after it ran into a complication.
I性视界传媒檓 sure many drivers have seen sections on the rood that have been 性视界传媒渕illed,性视界传媒 which means the top layer has been removed. To me, it looks like someone took a large rake to the road. (One of these location is at H.G. Mosley Parkway and McCann. Another is at Fairmont and McCann.)
Some of the project details are not yet available, but here性视界传媒檚 what TxDOT spokesman Jeff Williford sent me about the agency性视界传媒檚 plans:
性视界传媒淲e have previously milled the roughest intersections, and the remaining pavement is holding up for now. While we considered milling the entire corridor, we found the layer beneath the surface to be severely cracked. Removing the surface without addressing the base could lead to worse damage, especially during the winter months,性视界传媒 Williford said. 性视界传媒淥ur current plan is to mill off the surface and an additional 2 inches. This will remove the cracked layer. We will then replace it with 2 inches of hot mix asphalt.性视界传媒
性视界传媒淭he project is scheduled to be done at night, reducing the impact on traffic. Construction plans are underway, and work is scheduled to start in spring 2026, when weather conditions are more suitable.性视界传媒
STAMPER PARK POOL INFORMATION: The city of Longview has provided more information about what the actual cost of the new Stamper Park pool will be.
The city性视界传媒檚 outdoor pools have been through a big transition since the beginning of 2024. In a series of split votes, the City Council decided it would demolish the former Longview Swim Center 性视界传媒 a city pool at Pine Tree High School. Then, a divided council voted to build a new pool at Stamper Park. (A pool was located there and shut down a number of years ago).
The estimated price of the Stamper Park pool was more than expected, but still the council voted to proceed, planning to take up to $6.5 million out of reserves to pay for it.
The city received a couple of pieces of good information that have drastically reduced the price of the pool.
Public Works Director Dwayne Archer recently provided City Council an update with more detail:
Riley Harris Construction was awarded a contract to build the pool for about $4.3 million. Other estimated costs are: $467,800 for engineering and legal fees; $92,500 for geotechnical engineering fee; and $80,700 for a third-party inspector fee.
That puts the total cost of the project at $4.9 million, well below the expected $6.5 million.
Then state Rep. Jay Dean, R-Longview, announced the state, through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, is contributing $3 million to the pool project.
Albertson said that means Longview性视界传媒檚 cost for the pool is about $1.9 million.
The construction start date hasn性视界传媒檛 been determined.
