PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. - A man accused of stabbing and killing a woman in Phillipsburg, New Jersey was arrested over the weekend.
Jamari E. Dortch, 28, of Maryland, is charged with homicide, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and endangering an injured victim, according to a news release from the Warren County Prosecutor's Office.
On Saturday, members of the United States Marshal性视界传媒檚 Service Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force found and arrested Dortch, who was wanted in connection with the death of Hadiyah Peggins, who was killed on Friday, the prosecutor's office said.
Dortch is currently in the Prince Georges County Maryland Department of Corrections awaiting extradition to Warren County, New Jersey, according to the news release.
When he returns to New Jersey he will be taken to the Warren County Correctional Facility pending a detention motion, according to the prosecutor's office.
The prosecutor's office said homicide carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Second-degree crimes carry a maximum sentence of 10 years and third-degree crimes a maximum sentence of five years in New Jersey State Prison, according to the news release.
Peggins was stabbed and killed outside her house early Friday morning. Her family found her lying in the grass in the 400 block of Anderson Street.
Police were flagged down at around 3 a.m. Friday by frantic residents, who heard screaming.
The mother to a four-year-old daughter was found by her sister, in a grassy area behind her home, her sister says.
Hadiyah had been stabbed at least once.
Police say EMS provided life-saving support on scene. Peggins was transported to St. Luke's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
