Construction of the Gregg County parking facility in downtown Longview got a needed lift Tuesday when a large crane was used to disassemble a smaller crane that has been used to build the facility.

In August, a crane was put in place to help build the structure. It has towered over the downtown area since then. Now, the heavy lifting is over, and contractors are moving toward the finish line, Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt said Tuesday.

Work is beginning on the interior of the parking facility, which also includes about 13,000 feet of space for the county性视界传媒檚 veteran service, tax and election administration offices.

Stoudt said he hopes the facility will be open sometime in October.

The parking facility will provide 293 additional parking spaces, and county officials say it will alleviate a downtown parking shortage. About 1,000 people per week visit the courthouse, Stoudt previously said, but only 150 parking spaces are available around the courthouse.

Gregg County residents in November 2023 approved a bond measure allowing county officials to borrow up to $19 million for the facility性视界传媒檚 construction. County officials borrowed $17 million and put $7 million in county funds toward the project.
