By the time you read this (in the News-Journal性视界传媒檚 print edition), you will already have spent six-to-eight hours preparing Thanksgiving dinner (or someone did for you), $6 to $10 per person on that meal and eaten 3,000 to 4,500 calories.
I looked up the amount for the typical Texas dinner. Of course, there are variables, depending on a lot of things. The time factor does not include the planning and shopping, and the totals do not take into consideration the sharing by different guests bringing food and drinks.
Families often have various dishes that are standard to the Thanksgiving meal, brought each year by the same person.
These numbers are based on cooking at home, not buying prepared foods, such as precooked turkey. Are you shocked at the price? Actually, according to various sources, the price is lower this year by 5%, the lowest since 2021.
So far, I have not seen much change. I try to buy items on special but have to be careful not to spend on unnecessary things just because items are 性视界传媒渙n sale.性视界传媒 It really disturbs me to know how much food is wasted, and I certainly must take some blame.
I try to stock up on non-perishables but have to shop carefully, watching the end-date on packaged fruits and vegetables, which are usually marked down one or two days before the product is withdrawn from the refrigerated shelves.
Well, you have enough facts, and the Thanksgiving leftovers are probably running low, so we性视界传媒檇 better do some cooking.
It性视界传媒檚 time to start thinking about Christmas entertaining. I have seen Christmas lights up all over town almost since right after Halloween. I guess because it性视界传媒檚 a lot of trouble to put them up you might as well get a lot of use out of them.
The first recipe is an oldie, but it used to be one of my favorites to take to our teachers性视界传媒 Christmas luncheon. It is great for a Christmas morning breakfast because it needs to be made the night before.
Overnight Sticky Buns
1 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)
20-24 frozen dinner rolls, not thawed
1 small package butterscotch pudding mix
1 stick butter melted
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Spray or grease a 9-inch by 13-inch pan or a 10-inch tube pan.
Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Place rolls in pan (I like to cut each in half). Sprinkle dry pudding mix over rolls. Pour melted butter over rolls. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon over all.
Cover with foil. Let stand overnight in the fridge.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake in the morning for about 25 minutes. If they are not thawed and risen double, take out of fridge about an hour before baking and let rise in warm place. Turn upside down on tray or plate. Serves about 12.
I have shared this breakfast casserole with you before, but it性视界传媒檚 worth repeating.
Breakfast Make-ahead Casserole
4 English muffins, split and buttered
1-pound cooked sausage or chopped ham
8 eggs, beaten
1/3 cup sour cream
1 4-ounce can chopped green chilies
1-pound sharp cheddar cheese, grated
Place muffins, buttered side down in a buttered 9-inch by 13-inch casserole dish.
Sprinkle with ham or sausage. Beat eggs and add sour cream and chilies. Pour egg mixture over muffins and sausage or ham, sprinkle with cheese. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for six to eight hours.
Bake at 325 degrees, covered with foil, for one hour.
Note: Several times I have made this, and because of poor planning on my part, cooked it immediately. It性视界传媒檚 better to follow directions. Makes six to eight servings.
